ZAGREB

zagreb

Zagreb, capital and largest city of the Republic of Croatia. It has an area of 641,355 km2 and 779 145 inhabitants (figures from 2001). Zagreb is the cultural, research, economic, political and administrative center of the Republic of Croatia. Furthermore, it is the seat of the Croatian parliament (Sabor) and the Croatian Government. The most important industrial branches are production of electrical machines and appliances, chemical, pharmaceutical and textile industry, food processing and beverage industry, as well as the tobacco industry. Zagreb is also an important international trade and business center, as well as the traffic center of Central and Eastern Europe. Zagreb is one of Croatia’s largest tourist centers, not only for transit, but also as a destination of many tourist groups. The city is the center of congress tourism, business events and fairs, not only of Croatia, but also of this part of Europe. Being an important European traffic center, it is connected by road, air, railway and bus to all major European cities and all larger towns and tourist destinations in Croatia.

We recommend: Favorite souvenirs from Zagreb are known the world over and include: penkala (fountain pen) invented by Slavoljub Penkala from Zagreb over 80 years ago, and the cravat (tie) that was named after the Croatian cavaliers who, in the period from the Thirty Year War in the 17th century to the French Revolution, fought on European battlefields carrying their characteristic kerchiefs around their necks. Apart from that, you can get crystal, ceramics, and china artifacts, beautiful straw and wicker baskets, first class Croatian wines and other gastronomic products. Numerous restaurants in Zagreb serve specialties of local and international cuisine. Make sure to taste turkey, duck or goose with mlinci (traditional baked noodles), strukle (cooked pastry filled with cheese), cheese with cream and orehnjaca (walnut loaf). Seeing as Zagreb is near the sea, fresh seafood is available in seafood restaurants. The city has many fast food restaurants for fast food lovers. There are several sports and recreational centers in Zagreb. source: Generalturist

What to see?
Museums
The treasures of history are kept and exhibited in the museums of Zagreb. Apart from objects related to the history of the city, the Zagreb museums and art collections possess exhibits from the whole world round of very considerable historical and artistic value. Things of particular rarity are the Zagreb Mummy with the world's longest text in Etruscan, and the remains of Neanderthal prehistoric man (homo Krapinensis).

Zagreb parks
Green parks and fountains, avenues of trees and flowers starting with Zrinjevac in the town centre. The series of parks go from town center down to the railway station, through the botanical gardens and up to Marulić and Tito Squares where the theatre stands. They are known as the Lenucci horseshoe because of the shape they form and the name of the landscape gardener who planned them. They are well provided with benches where you can rest from sightseeing and plan the next thing you want to do.
sljemeNature park Medvednica
is in close proximity to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Due to its numerous landscaped trails, mountain houses, historical monuments and recreational areas, the central part of this wooded mountain gives an impression of a spacious city park. By walking down the educational trails, you can learn about some of almost one thousand recorded plant varieties, listen to the song of around a hundred bird types, and come across numerous insects and animals. The walk through the forest restores natural balance to life, and each moment spent in the Medvednica Nature Park enriches your existence. Welcome!
Maksimir
is situated in the eastern part of the town. It was open to public in 1794 and was the first public promenade in this part of the Europe. It was named after its founder, the Zagreb bishop Maksimilian Vrhovec (1752 - 1827) who, apart from the archbishop Haulik, took the credit for its arrangement.
Maksimir is arranged in the place of part of the oak woods in the middle of the 19th century.

Gastronomy

If you are looking for a place to refresh after a walk around the city, or after a sightseeing tour, then a restaurant in the city is a right spot for you. The choice is up to you, since the city offers something for everyone.
Starting from a range of restaurants prepairing and offering specialties of international cuisines, like Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Japanese or Indian, up to restaurants offering seafood and of course unavoidable restaurants offering local specialties from Zagreb and Prigorje area.
Some of the restaurants with traditional offer are on the town outskirts, in the so called green area, so the visit to such a restaurant is at the same time a good daytrip suggestion. The city centre, however, abunds in small, mostly Italian restaurants. Some of those places have nice terraces, so you can enjoy your meal and the view to the city as well.
If you don't like to spend to much time munching your meals and sitting in restaurants, in that case you have plenty of fast food restaurants, sandwich bars where you can have a quick meal or some pastry, and then go on to learn more about the town. source: Adriatica.net
